DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE

Founded in 2002, the ITU Department of Interior Architecture began undergraduate courses in the 2002-2003 academic year.

The undergraduate program was generated as part of the contemporary metropolitan character of Istanbul, as well as the evolving architectural education paradigms, research, and tools.

The aim of the program is to give students the skills and abilities to transform the scientific, technological, artistic, and intellectual knowledge of the interior architecture field and profession.

EDUCATION

The annual new enrollment of the undergraduate program is approximately 60 students per academic year and there are more than 330 active students registered in the department within the undergraduate program. Until the end of the 3rd semester, undergraduates are part of a joint program with the Architecture department. This provides students with an essential architecture foundation and also allows them the opportunity to pursue a double major or program transfer credit. At the beginning of the 4th semester, undergraduates take courses and design studios specifically related to interior architecture. Scholars and professionals in the interior architecture field teach these related courses and studios. Students must fulfill a total of 155 credits in order to graduate from the program and the curriculum consists of 52 courses: 44 compulsory and 8 electives.

GRADUATE PROGRAMS

International Master of Interior Architectural Design Program (IMIAD) is a post-graduate program under the Institute of Social Sciences and is carried out by the Interior Architecture Department of the ITU Faculty of Architecture, since the 2006-2007 academic year. The ‘IMIAD’ Program is an EU Project and was developed as a Curriculum Development project under the leadership of Hochschule für Technik Stuttgart (HFT-S) Germany in 2005. The program was established as a joint program under the partnership between Hochschule für Technik Stuttgart (HFT-S) in Germany, Scuola the colleges Professional Della Svizzera (SUPSA) in Switzerland, Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in Turkey, Lahti University of Applied Sciences (LAMK) in Finland and Edinburgh College of Art ( ECA) in Scotland. LAMK and ECA left the partnership in 2014. CEPT University (CEPT) in India joined the partnership in 2012 and University of Cincinnati (UC) in USA is expected to join the IMIAD partnership soon.

The mission of the IMIAD program is to consider the contemporary theories of education and conduct research at an international level. The vision of the program is to create an unprecedented program of international collaboration from the combining of education, research, and practice. Other intentions of the program include creating an international and multidisciplinary environment for the exchange of postgraduate and Professional experience, promoting the professional conditions in different countries and cultural environments, as well as strengthening professional connections abroad and sharing education and professional experiences.

In the second semester, each student attends a compulsory exchange semester in one of the partner universities outside their home institution. An international workshop, where all IMIAD students come together, is organized by one of the partner institutions at the beginning of the third semester. The attendance to the international workshop is also compulsory.
